BBC World News is broadcasting artist William Kentridge’s most ambitious project to date combining music, dance, film projections, mechanised sculptures and shadow play to create an imaginative landscape on an epic scale.

The BBC film explores the creation of ‘The Head and the Load’ which will bring to life the untold story of the hundreds of thousands of African porters and carriers who served in British, French and German forces during the First World War. The world premiere of Kentridge’s major new work will be performed in July against the backdrop of London’s Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. One of South Africa’s leading composers, Philip Miller, and musical director Thuthuka Sibisi will create an original score drawing on a wide range of traditions. Orchestra collective The Knights will perform along with an international cast of singers, dancers and performers.

Broadcasts start on the 21st July 2018. Full listings here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/n3ct59jn

Many events have marked the centenary of World War One – but Africa has seldom rated a mention until now.
